Jacob, age 5
Jacob is 5 years old now. He is the youngest of three brothers. There is Tyler, 14 years old, Aaron, 9 years old, and their dog stewie. Jacob can be shy …but once he warms up there is no slowing him down. He is full of energy and has been trying to keep up with his brothers from the day he was born. It is that internal drive that has kept him strong through his treatments. Jacob was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in March 2006. The first year of his treatment was the worst. It was during that period that he lost his hair and was weak most of the time. His current treatment is called "maintenance" and it consists of daily chemotherapy at home with once a month treatments in the hospital. His treatment will be completed on May 15, 2009 and he will be considered cured. Through all of his treatments Jacob has remained strong with a good attitude. He knows it’s important to take his medicine and follow the treatment plan. His willingness and compliance makes his family grateful and proud. Jacob has said "some kids are sick and some kids aren’t," some kids are sick and need shots, and some kids don’t, and some kids are sick and die and some kids don’t." Jacob’s grandfather is very ill with cancer and Jacob said it makes him sad when he sees him, but he will be brave and not cry when they are together. Jacob loves sports and will play anything competitive. Even when he felt his worst he would make his dad play catch , hockey, or baseball even if only for 5 minutes. These days however he is feeling really well and his dad is the one that has to ask him to take a break.. |
